Majority Leader Van Bramer Celebrates Birthday With a “Party with a Purpose”

On Monday, August 21st I celebrated my  birthday with a “party with a purpose” at Shi Restaurant in Long Island City to support and raise funds for OutServe SLDN, which provides legal defense services to trans service members who have come under attack by President Trump, and the Astoria/Long Island City NAACP branch, which does tremendous work empowering and improving our community in Western Queens and fighting for the equal rights of all people regardless of race and the elimination of race-based discrimination.

With all that’s happening in our world, it’s more important than ever to come together, speak out against hate, and support organizations that are on the front lines in the fight for our values. After President Trump’s repeated attacks on the LGBT community and his shameful response to the racism and hate on display in Charlottesville, I turned my birthday into an act of resistance where our community could come together and say with one voice that we are stronger than those who promote policies of hate. While it’s easy to get discouraged by what we’re seeing in our country and world, I’m inspired by the strength and love I see in our community each and every day. I encourage everyone to donate what they can and volunteer for organizations that are fighting for our values, like OutServe SLDN and the Long Island City/Astoria branch of the NAACP.
