On May 16th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended the Queens Museum of Art’s 40th Anniversary Gala. At the event, attendees also celebrated Tom Finklepearl’s 10th Anniversary as Executive Director. On May 16th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended LIC Arts Open’s Nabe Nite Out at Gotham Center in Long Island City. The evening event featured one of the largest exhibitions in the festival with work from local artists Peter Goldwater, Peter Rosenthal, Jean-Marie Guyaux, Beth Williams and William Garrett, Marlon Krieger, Kenny Greenberg and Annalisa Iadicicco. On May 16th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined hundreds of members of SEIU Local 32BJ to support their efforts show the Port Authority, the airlines and the companies at John F. Kennedy Airport the need for an airport bill of rights to guarantee basic standards for all non-union subcontracted airport workers. Currently, the vast majority of passenger service workers at JFK are employed by private contractors who do not provide them with adequate wages and benefits to support them and their families.
On May 16th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Mr. Met on the steps of City Hall as the Mets' announced that Citi Field will be the host of the 2013 All Star Game.
On May 16th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s new visitor entrance. The new addition will add an inviting gateway to the 52 acre space, providing visitors with a new public plaza, gift shop, a small café and interpretive exhibits.

On May 14th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer organized a Town Hall Meeting with the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House in Queensbridge to discuss the Bloomberg Administration’s proposed cuts to their after-school and their adult-literacy programs. At the meeting, hundreds of parents expressed their concerns about the drastic impact these cuts would have on their households as well as the future development of their children within the community. If funding is not restored, 217 elementary school children that are currently being served at the Queensbridge Houses and the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House will have nowhere to go after school. In this photo, Council Member Van Bramer tells the hundreds of parents, children and education advocates in attendance about his efforts to restore the crucial funding to these programs over the next six weeks until the budget is adopted.
On May 14th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer co-chaired Executive Budget hearings on Cultural Affairs and Libraries. The Bloomberg Administration’s Executive Budget proposed a nearly $100 million cut in funding to the City’s three library systems; Queens Library, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the New York Public Library. The administration also proposed a $50 million cut to the Department of Cultural Affairs which would crush the City’s cultural organizations.
Since being elected, Council Member Van Bramer has helped lead the fight to restore funding to the City’s three library systems, cultural organizations and non-profits. Over the last two years, as Chair of the New York City Council’s Cultural Affairs Committee, Council Member Van Bramer helped restore nearly $250 million to cultural organizations and libraries. Last year alone, Council Member Van Bramer led the charge to restore a record $130 million for cultural institutions and libraries, saving thousands of jobs and maintaining 5 day library service.
On May 12th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended the LIC Arts Open 2012 Launch Party at Reis Studios in Long Island City. The opening reception honored the 10th anniversary of Reis Studios and featured the “10x10” exhibition of artwork donated by over 100 artists from Long Island City. On May 12th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer honored Ema Gheraszim-Mailath with a Proclamation on her 100th birthday. Council Member Van Bramer congratulated the Sunnyside resident for hitting such a momentous milestone and wished that she may have a healthy and happy future.
