On May 11th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer co-chaired a Cultural Affairs Committee along with the Committee of Small Businesses to discuss naturally occurring cultural districts (NOCD’s). As Chair of the Cultural Affairs Committee, Council Member Van Bramer believes it is essential to support our local cultural organization because by doing so we can spur the local economy which is beneficial to everyone in the surrounding community. At the hearing, Council Member Van Bramer also announced the LIC Arts Open (May 12-20). As the Long Island City arts festival embarks on its second year, Council Member Van Bramer invites you to get a glimpse into the work spaces that produce the beautiful and thought-provoking work that come out of Western Queens. On May 10th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and his mother, Elizabeth, attended the Woodside Senior Center’s Mother’s Day Event at Ricardo’s by the Bridge in Astoria. During the event, Council Member Van Bramer swore in seven local residents to the senior center’s advisory council and also took the opportunity to dance both salsa and merengue with a few of the ladies.
On May 10th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer met with constituents, community leaders and organizers to discuss issues facing immigrant communities in our area. On May 9th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended Queens Theatre’s 2012 Gala. At the annual event, attendees celebrated the opening performance of “Heat Wave: The Jack Cole Project,” a musical tribute to the late dancer and choreographer. On May 9th, Council Member Van Bramer and his staff played basketball with neighborhood kids of Sunnyside and children of PS 150’s after-school program.
On May 9th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer rallied with parents and children to push and restore critical funding to PS 150’s after-school program. This year, Mayor Bloomberg is proposing to slash a significant amount of funding from the New York City’s day-care and after-school programs. This move would leave tens of thousands of children in New York City without the essential after-school programs and much needed tutoring services they require. If enacted, these cuts would end after-school programming for both Sunnyside Community Services and Woodside On the Move.

On May 9th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer toured the Studio Towers Renovation Project atop Carnegie Hall. The Studio Towers renovation will allow Carnegie Hall to reuse its space as an inspirational music education center that will connect performers, students and audiences to one another. These new facility will also provide a wonderful setting in which to inspire a lifelong love of music in young musicians, students, and educators.
