On April 11th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer visited the Flux Factory in Long Island City to speak with local cultural organizations who will be participating in the 4th Annual Queens Arts Express. Queens Arts Express is an annual spring arts festival of exhibitions, events, performances and eateries taking places at multiple venues along the 7 train route. After speaking to local cultural organizations about the significance of participating in the 4th annual event Council Member Van Bramer took a tour of Flux Factory with Executive Director, Christina Vassallo. In this photo, Council Member Van Bramer discusses Flux Factory’s relationship with local artists and upcoming events coming up in the space with Christina and Douglas Paulson, Residency Director of the art space.
On April 10th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer spoke at the Queens Symphony Orchestra’s kick-off for their First Annual Arts and Music Festival at Queens College. QSO’s first annual festival’s theme is 1001 Voices – Discover the Immigrant Experience in Queens and will feature three free concerts as well as in-school residencies, performances and young soloist competitions at over 50 local arts organizations highlighting the borough’s many diverse arts and cultural groups.
On April 10th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Congressman Joe Crowley, State Senator Michael Gianaris and Good Samaritan, Mike Novak, spoke out against a recent sex attack that took place in Sunnyside. Council Member Van Bramer also spent the morning with the other elected officials and Mike Novak handing out fliers with a description of the perpetrator in order to raise awareness about the recent attack to the public.
On April 6th, Sunnyside residents, Mohammad Islam, his wife Lipiara Begum and their three daughters, visited Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer at his District Office to thank him for helping reunite their family. Mr. Islam is fighting deportation as he seeks political asylum. Council Member Van Bramer has worked with immigration officials to bring Mr. Islam back home from a detention facility and continues to advocate on behalf of the family. On Thursday April 5th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Mayor Mike Bloomberg at Citi Field for Opening Day of the 2012 Season for the New York Mets. The Mets won 1-0!
On April 4th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended a celebration of the Chocolate Factory’s critically acclaimed new show, “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again…” at the Long Island City home of Diane and Barry Eisenstat. On April 4th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended the SculptureCenter’s Lucky Draw 2012 in Long Island City. The art raffle offers first time and seasoned collectors access to artworks by top emerging and established artists. On April 4th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined numerous community and elected officials to cut the ribbon for Jet Blue’s new headquarters in the Brewster Building in Long Island City. On April 4th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Mayor Mike Bloomberg, City officials and Long Island City residents to officially open Long Island City’s new park, Dutch Kills Green at Queens Plaza. The new park now provides the neighborhood with new crosswalks, sidewalks, bike lanes, countdown pedestrian signals, 489 new trees, benches and additional green space. On April 3rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer was honored with The Library Champion Award for his commitment to and support of the Queens Library. Council Member Van Bramer has a longstanding connection to the Queens Library where he spent 11 years working as the Chief External Affairs Officer for the institution before being elected to the City Council. As Chair of the Cultural Affairs and Libraries Committee of the City, Council Member Van Bramer led the fight to restore nearly $250 million to cultural organizations and libraries. Last year alone, he also led the charge to restore a record $130 million for cultural institutions and libraries, saving thousands of jobs and maintaining a minimum of 5 day library service.
